Does everyone desire what they can't have?

Are desires specific to every person's DNA and life? Say a desire to be influential to many people. Is this caused by the specific person's life in growing up?
Or are desires caused by what people lack? Say that person desires to be influential to many people because no one respected that person for most of their childhood and now they yearn for it.
And when we get what we've been yearning for, something else pops up that we really want and now yearn for the new thing.
If the latter is true, then we can accept that we as humans will always desire something that we can't have or obtain, thus we can do our best to come to peace with that.
