Does EDGE really exist?

Maybe I should've thought to ask that nice tech lady at T-mobile this today, but I didn't think of it at the time. D'oh!

I'm in a great reception area (4-5 bars), not in the 850mhz roaming area, and have never once seen my bb go from gprs to edge! Supposedly something like 80% of their network is covered by edge so you'd think that in all the places I've been that there would be edge someplace. I even tried setting my network manually to the Cingular option to see if that might jump start it, but I didn't get a connection at all when I tried that.

Is there something I just don't have set right to be able to pick up this faster connection? I've tried searching for maps of where they do have edge coverage in NH (searched in here and googled it), but nothing. My bb is an 8700g

yes, there is an edge network. I'm not very up-to-date on the prograjming of phones, so I couldn't tell you what's wrong. But There is edge. Talk to the hot t-mobile lady... (all t-mobile offices have a hot t-mobile chick)

You can find T-mobile coverage map here http://www.t-mobile.com/coverage/

As i understand edge should go on auto when your by an upgraded tower.

~via BB (wap.rabroad.com)~On T-mo in florida. My 8700 just goes to edge on its own. Edge is where it likes to be. If its not on edge it may be u don't have the coverage.
Check the map link above. Its pretty spot on for my local area.

I've used the coverage map mentioned in the link, but that only shows total coverage, not edge coverage. Just seems like I should have that edge connection someplace around this state

Oh yeah, I do get GPRS all the time here in spotty NH It's actually not all that spotty...it just depends on which carrier you have. I do have US Cellular for my cell phone and there's very few spots with no signal. I was at my sister's yesterday though and had no signal on the cell but did have a signal with the T-mo BB...go figure! Hopefully T-mo will be increasing coverage here and doing whatever they need to do to get that EDGE signal to me.

Funny you should mention that...I did try making it use the Cingular network by manually setting it to that, but it won't pick up a signal at all, and I KNOW Cingular has coverage here too.

Would that require you to unlock your phone? I don't know how it works, but maybe Cingular and TMobile do not have a roaming agreement or something?

I am probably wrong though so don't take my word for it. Still figuring this all out myself.

I believe T-mo and Cingular have some kind of agreement, and since the email techs at T-mo told me to try this when I asked them a different question, then it must not have to be unlocked. I'm just trying to figure out this cool little gadget myself since I've only had it about a month.

I live in the Southeast and get nothing but EDGE anywhere I go. No big deal though, seems to move just as slowly as any other GPS network. Maybe in the middle of the night when everyone's off the network it will speed up?
