Does economics REALLY have to do THAT much with computer science?

My dad emphasizes how much I'm going to have to use computer science when I go to study economics, but he's never actually taken economics, and he just thinks that I'll need it to help me number crunch. Or something like that.

If anyone out there has studied economics, is computer science CRITICAL to learning economics? Am I going to need to be FLUENT in a computer language to do this? Honest answers please.
 
It depends on what you are going to do with that knowledge.

If you are planning on creating economic simulations, then good programming skills would be a must. The underlying skill - being able to follow chains of causation, is pretty important in terms of a conceptual understanding of economic theory. Although that's not quite the same thing as coding.

In terms of macroeconomics, there are a lot of variables to consider and some coding skills would doubtlessly be at least useful in keeping track of them and measuring their interrelation.
