Does eating not enough calories really make you gain weight?

I recently went to a health website and put in my age, height, weight, and other details.
It told me that I need to eat 1810 calories a day in order to lose a pound a week.

I'm 15 and overweight by like...at least 20 pounds.

So I've started counting my calories, and today I had breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a few snacks. I only ate 1315 calories. Do I actually need to keep eating? What if I counted a little bit off and I actually ate more than that?
I heard if you don't eat enough your body will think you're starving it, so it will store fat. So if I don't eat enough does it really make me fatter?
I've also been exercising every day for at least 20 minutes, various intensities.
