Does being around electronics help phone reception?

So the other day the power in my house was shut off. When I came home my phone had terrible reception. It normally has 4-5 bars average (5 being the highest), and only with the power shut off was it bad. I had horrible reception and could barely get a bar. But as soon as the power was turned back on, I got my usual 4-5 bars. At first I thought the electric company just shut down the nearest cell tower, but what's weird is that in one room in my house that's filled with electronics (TV, PS3, surround sound, DVD Player) I always get full 5 bars in that room. So I'm thinking somehow being around electronics helps with my phone's reception but I can't figure out why.
