does anyone remember an old book in which a man hangs his hat on a tree and disappears?

i used to read the book when i was a little girl (at the least 20 years ago) and the artwork was very sophistocated... i dont remember what went on in the book, only to say at the very end the man hung his hat on a tree branch and disappeared and the narration i believe ended in mid-sentence... it had a very ominous feel to it... any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated as i would like to find this book for a present for my daughter <3
