There are no aliens visiting earth, we are the aliens. The alien is within you, the ancient people knew it, they communed with their inner alien.

as Socrates said the goal in life is to know thy self, and if you haven't met the alien within you yet, then you probably don't know yourself very well, you just think you do.

I'd consider it extremely unlikely. If there was a species out there intelligent enough to manage interstellar travel, I really don't see why they'd be so scared of humanity they'd never show themselves these days.
