...actual mountains? I believe there were a couple instances of this mixing of man-made materials with natural phenomena. I cannot remember what the name of the artist who did it was.

Christo and Jeanne-Claude. They did 'the Gates' in central park - all orange - and made a mountain look like an orange fabric was behind it.
