Does anyone KNOW what will happen if I put Regular gasoline in a 2000 Lexus ES300?

Hey, I'm thinking of buying a 2000 Lexus ES300. I know it's recommended that Premium is put in the car, but I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with what would happen if you put Regular gas in it, or a similar car.

And yes, I am aware that Premium is what's recommended. Please don't tell me to go read the manual, and please don't give me theoretical scenarios. I know all the theoretical scenarios. Please answer only if you either have experience, or know someone who did this. Thank you much =)
Does engine knocking damage the car?
 
It may (I repeat "MAY") end up with a knocking sound from the engine after a while.
