People who study cosmology have degrees in astronomy, astrophysics, or physics. At the undergrad level, you won't find more than a course or two in cosmology. Even at the graduate level, your degree would be in physics or astrophysics and you'd study cosmology. You do need a PhD to work in this field; there aren't any jobs without one, it's all research. That takes about 10 years on average - 4 for undergrad and 6 graduate. Major in physics as an undergrad and take courses in math, astronomy, and computer science. Spend your summers doing research and keep your GPA above 3.5, much above if possible, to get into a good graduate program in physics or astronomy. You can do a physics major almost anywhere, but some of the top astrophysics schools include the ivies, Stanford, Berkeley, CalTech, MIT, U Chicago, U Washington, U Arizona, Ohio State, U Virginia, UMass Amherst, and many others. Again though, you can do your undergrad almost anywhere and get into a good grad program. I did mine at a liberal arts college.
