My husband is planning on taking his ex-wife back to court to see if he can have his child support lowered. He does not make the same money he made at the time of his divorce. He literally just "gave" her EVERYTHING when they divorced. I know that we do not need a lawyer to go to court, but I really think it would help. My husband agrees with this, but we just can NOT afford it. We are struggling to pay our bills, and paying for a lawyer is just not an option. I know I have heard about people getting legal help for next to nothing, but how?? Does any one have any advice for me? Thank You so much!

Hubby should have learned by now that nothing is more expensive than not getting a good lawyer when you need one! He never should have done a DIY divorce and child support agreement without a lawyer to begin with. That's why he's in so much difficulty now. If you are shy on money, all the more reason to hire a good attorney. Quit quibbling and get a lawyer! It will pay for itself in time.

You do not want a Legal Aid attorney in this matter even if you qualify. I won't go into all the reasons for that, but do NOT try to get a Legal Aid attorney on this matter!

Get one who specializes in Family Law. If you do not know a good attorney, call your state's Bar Association Attorney Referral Service and ask for referral to an attorney who practices Family Law, especially child support and child custody issues. The initial consultation should be no more than $50 most places, and the lawyer may be willing to work with you on some sort of payment plan.

Nope, you're not going to get a decent, cheap family law attorney.

Most of the time, though, you can just go through the state DA's office. Child support is pretty straight forward - you plug in his income, you plug in her income, you add in the number of kids each has, and voila! there's the support number.
