Anywhere but Here

The frostbite of the cold had me in for most of the weekend and things did not seem to want to let up. The constant snow and speeding winds made it difficult to get anything done outside of the house. It was as if I had reached my breaking point. The slivers of ice on the window pain looked like small droplets of white cotton settling after floating around in the sky. I paced back and forth wondering what there was to do on such a rough winter day. It came to my realization all of a sudden that I was afraid to go to sleep. The normal person dreams of fairy tales and faraway places that anyone would love to be in but not me; my dream came with such an impact that every time I closed my eyes it was as if I would wake up in another dimension that was far worse than anyone could ever imagine. I would try to wake myself but it was as if I was stuck each time I went there and nothing could let me out. The dreams would last longer and longer each night. I would awaken with heavy beads of sweat dripping from my face and forehead. It was like something was trying to pull me in and keep me there. The more I tried to communicate with whatever it was keeping me there, the more I would fight to escape from that strange world.
I recall the first time I had the dream. I awoke inside a dark chamber yelling for someone to come and get me out. No sound would come out of my mouth. I was beginning to think that whatever was going on was something far greater than myself. The chamber itself was dirty and there were rats crawling everywhere. The stench had me wanting to get up and vomit my lunch. The whole place had my mind wandering about trying to figure out how I was going to get myself out of here; that's when I heard a knock at the door. I jumped up and ran to the bathroom. Not only did it have affects on my psyche inside the realm but outside as well. Something tells me that I'm in it for the long haul.
The knocking continued for about 5 minutes. I then heard a voice call out to me and ask if I was there. To my reluctant surprise and relief, it was just Gabriel, my neighbor and best friend in the world. He asked me why I looked so spooked. He said my face looked so pale it was as if I had seen a ghost. It was difficult to explain what was happening with these paranormal dreams and I wasn't sure if he would even begin to understand. I thought that I could explain myself and have him produce a puzzled look on my face or I could not say anything and suffer through this by myself.
The best thing to do at this point is tell him and hope that he doesn't think I'm crazy. I began explaining to him about these wild and crazy dreams that I've been having for the past few weeks and he's libel to jump out of his chair. I didn't know if he thought I was insane or if he truly was as terrified as I was about all this. He found it to make no sense. He questioned my sanity for a good bit of the conversation but I tried to brush it off and continue. He advised me to go see a psychiatrist, but I refused to give some shrink dollars on the hour just to misdiagnose me and send me either to the ward or have me hopped up on medicine that would surely take away my freedom. I asked him to help me. He didn't know how but I think I had an idea. I would need him to come with me inside these dreams to find out what the root was and how I was going to get them to stop. That evening we decided that the best way to get sleep was to watch movies and talk until neither of us could stay awake. He still was baffled as to how he was going to get into my dreams but I thought that if he was to channel his thoughts into mine then just maybe he can get in and help me to battle the strange occurrences inside my head.
