Does anyone know an author who has been affected by a war?

I'm doing a research project and I need help finding an author who has been affected by a war in his country. Can anyone suggest an author who has and maybe if (s)he has written wrote about the war?

Tim O'Brien was drafted into the Vietnam war, and many of his books are written about his experiences. The Things They Carried is, in my opinion, one of the best, most heartbreaking, books ever written. This book will change your life.
 
Ok, well there's Elie Wiesel, a survivor of the Holocaust, who wrote the short novel "Night." And then, there's also ... I forgot his name!! However, his two books are very interesting to read, for they are in the form of comics/graphic novels, and they are called "Maus" and "Maus II." This author's father was a Holocaust survivor. Also look at ... I cannot believe I forgot his name as well, but he was a British Socialist who had something to do with something in India. Just one of his books is called "Animal Farm."
