Does anyone know a fair and honest auto mechanic in St. Petersburg, FL?

As opposed to what?

I've been working on cars for a long time, and have met many mechanics in the course of this.

Mechanics are generally fair and honest. It's the customer that simply doesn't understand that they are being so.

For example, I had a friend who had a transmission going bad. The mechanics tried to explain it'd be around 1500$ to repair. He thought this was outrageous and a rip off, so he drove around some more on it.

Finally, the tranny blew, and caused some extra damage to the car, and it cost him almost double.

Also, keep in mind for labor, the hours are decided by a book. For example, common charge is 4 hours labor for sparkplugs. It does NOT matter that yours only take 1 hour. The regulated labor charge, is 4 hours. So, that's what they must follow. A lot of people don't understand this, and figure the mech is trying to rip them off. They're not. They have regulated service charges, hours, rates, etc; and they are simply following the rules.

So, most people go to the cheapest mechanic they can find. And these are cheap, because they skim from the rules. Then the customers wonder why the work was sub-par.

It's a simple rule of thumb. Good work costs good money. Cheap money, equals cheap work.
