Shopping less is always the greener option, but definitely avoid impulse buying, and avoid overly packaged products if you can. Be really thoughtful about what you buy. Try to buy locally as much as possible, and at the very very least buy U.S. made goods if you can find them. The U.S. has much more stringent emissions policies on manufacturing than say China does. Do your homework online and read different retailers' corporate responsibility statements (you can usually find them on the About Us section of their websites) and try to buy from retailers that are committed to sustainable products and stores.
As far as grocery shopping, farmers markets are always a great alternative to buying produce at the grocery store. Local eating is good in a lot of ways. It's more common to find organic produce at farmers markets, and you're investing in your local economy (as opposed to trucking stuff in from across the country or out of the country).

Consumers drive the market to become sustainable, not the other way around. Do your homework and buy responsibly.

use reusable canvas shopping bags, never accept plastic.
no soda or bottled water.
buy items with minimal packaging, make sure packaging is recyclable.
buy fresh produce only, locally grown and organic if possible.
clothing,except underwear & socks,buy at thrifts/vintage.
dishes and toys,buy used.
glass containers instead of plastic.
use library instead of buying books, mags or dvds.

I do all my shopping at a health food grocer. They stock all chemical free and organic all natural baby and cleaning products. Bring canvas bags and buy things with a biodegradable package. They have organic chemical free produce. They only stock food that is in season so there is less environment impact due to transporting over long distances. It is more expensive though but to me it is worth it I sleep better at night. They also have a recycle program where you save money if you bring empty containers back and recyle them.

use canvas bags, avoid products in plastic wrap or plastic containers that will go to waste. try to buy organic and products that are in season. it sends tons of co2 into the air when products have to be shipped from across the world because they arent in season in your town.
