I'm working on my novel to submit as part of my MFA package, and my writing needs lots of work. It's only the first 17 pages. I obviously don't write on a professional level. Do you think this will hurt my chances? Or, do they not expect perfection? I think the purpose of the writing sample is to see if you're writing on a graduate level, so do they expect my samples to show that I can write fiction well? For instance, I have a problem with descriptions, and I have a hard time recognizing when I'm writing passively. Both are a no-no when it comes to fiction writing. Do you think this will count against me? Or, is this something they'll expect and will work with you to improve? :shrugs:
I know that if they reject you they'll tell you what you need to work on. For instance, they might tell you to take some creative writing classes before applying again.
What do you think?
Don't get me wrong, It can't hurt to apply, and I'm going to apply nonetheless. I also don't feel comfortable emailing the program director to tell her all my problems with writing, lol. I kinda don't want people to remember me in that way.
