Does anyone ever think we're in a matrix type jail?

Sometimes I think that life as we perceive it is essentially one of many virtual prison worlds. With the way technology is progressing I don't think it's going to be too long, maybe a few hundred years before we figure out how to manipulate time and travel through it. Wouldn't be interesting if all we were were brains uploaded to computers, imagining everything we see and accepting it as being real. It isn't too far-fetched that this planet could be a futuristic jail cell as I had mentioned. It would be giving the criminal justice but mercy at the same time and they'd never get out because they'd never realize why they were there in the first place.

We could very well be people in the future stuck in a futuristic virtual jail cell, and when our sentence ends we "die". What do you all think?
