I'm always curious about why people have to associate the main or major business/shopping/busy area in any big city as "Downtown"? Why not call that part of the city as "Middle Town" or "Center Town"? Could anybody tell when, where, and how this word was originated/evolved from? Many of, so call, "Downtown" around the world are not geographically located at the lower part of the city, so I'm not really quite sure how this word got spread at the beginning and become a popular word/term "Downtown" as we use today. Please kindly focus on explaining the origin/history of this word rather than giving me the definition of this word. Very appreciate your input. Thanks.
