does any one know about trade in for your cars?

So I have a 2007 suburban and the payments are becoming a bit hard what with work slowed down and all. I still owe about 20 thosand on it and i am one month late on payment so there is this dealership by my house that says "we trade in no matter what you owe" So my question is how does this work and is it a good idea to do hopeing to make a trade and get something with smaller payments. Thanks
