does any bike sprocket work with any freewheel?

o. im making a custom bike and. i want to chang the crank sprocket. the sprocket has 44 teethh. and the one i want to but has 44 teeth. so basicly do i have to have a certain amount of teeth for the freewheel in the back. or as long as the chain fully wraps around the sprocket and freewheel im ok??

please help..im a biginner at building bikes so bare with me
 
okay here goes anytime you change a gear set your chain size changes you can go as big as 54 tooth if you use the right back spacing but you'll have to add links conversely if you go smaller you have to remove links now a note on gears smaller in front faster taking off better on hills and trails bigger on front more top end less hill climbing rear gear bigger more power lower top end smaller more top speed less power you can buy a chain link tool for a couple bucks at a hardware store and make gear changes easier but if you use same number of teeth then chains stays the same
