Does an author have to live anywhere in particular?

If you write books, anywhere. If you want to work for a large publication, sure you live nearby so its fast to get to work.

and journalists are only restricted by what papers they work for. if someone wanted to give up a job at the new york post or the la times for a smaller gig out in the middle of iowa somewhere they could still work.

A journalist would most likely work in an area to which he/she was assigned to report. A novelist could work absolutely anywhere they can sit and gather their thoughts.
