Does america need a publicly funded media such as the BBC?

I ask this because in Britain, the BBC is seen as a very reputable news source, and unlike other news agencies, it doesn't have bias in its reporting and tells you the story like it is and allows you to make up your own mind without trying to tell you what to think.

What worries me about the American media system is that there isn't a single media outlet which doesn't serve the interests of a certain group. Fox news expresses the views of republicans and religious people, cnn and more left wing outlets express the views of liberals, but whats the station for people who just want news without having subjective opinions attached to them?

Although I recognize the BBC isn't perfect, it's still the most reputable news agency in the world, and if the BBC reports something, people often take it for the truth, unlike fox or cnn for example.

I also like the way the news anchors on the BBC are just there to tell the news without telling us their personal opinions on it - unlike Bill Reilly for example who spends most of his time telling us his own opinions rather than just telling us the news without any crap.

Does anyone else agree America should have it's own publicly funded news system - so that we could have some sane, impartial news? I also wished American media placed more emphasis on events in foreign countries, rather than report on small unimportant news if its a slow news day. It would really broaden the mind of the population.

PBS and C-Span are doing quite well. And I have found many national SW news broadcasts to be very prejudiced. Spanish radio, the CBC, and the BBC, hates the Bush administration. I no longer listen to them for factual reporting.
