does ambition/desire dictate the rate of scientific progression?

my motto; what will be done tomorrow can be done today could have been done yesterday.

hypothetically, if a person knew enough about mathematics and science, and had the desire to push forward, could they speed progression along far beyond what would happen without this ambition.
