Does activating a different phone change your contract with Verizon?

I have an EnV3 and it's super crappy. My contract ends on 9/18/11, but I need to use a different phone because the EnV3 is unuseable. If I activate my old flip phone, will it change the date my contract expires (the date I can get a new phone)?
