Does a star's personal life affect your opinion of their art?

So, Woody Allen is one of my favorite directors. I love Annie Hall, Manhattan, Hannah and Her Sisters, Match Point, etc. I mentioned this to a "friend" recently (a mainstream type who doesn't see a lot of movies), and his reaction was, more or less, "Gross! The old dude who married his daughter?! You watch that crap?" Of course, Soon-Yi isn't Allen's daughter (not even his adopted daughter), but this is beside the point. He was more or less saying Allen's films are rendered less valuable because of the Soon-Yi issue. I see such a controversy as none of my business. The same for Tom Cruise and Mel Gibson, the same for Roman Polanski, etc. Of course, you can't avoid hearing about such tabloid scandals, but I'd never say, "Gibson's an ass now! I'll never watch Gallipoli or Lethal Weapon again!"

What are your thoughts on this? I'm sure lots will agree with me, but it'd be interesting to hear another perspective, too.
