Does a progressive tax law make more sense than what we have now?

If you want to live in a society such as we have/had here in America, that protects you, provides roads for you, teaches you how to speak, read, spell, ensures food & water standards, provides courts, prisons, CDC, FAA, etc...then shouldn't we all be willing to pay for it. Further, the more one depend on these things, which the wealthy obviously depend on disproportionately more than most of us (some examples, roads for labor, public transportation for labor, educated labor, courts which get used by corporations more than citizens, etc..), then shouldn't they pay at a higher tax rate ? As it is, they pay less... Is there any logic behind this... or is it simply due to having politicians who work for the wealthy, over working on behalf of the average American?

In a nutshell, shouldn't the more you are able to capitalize off of the society that has been provided by the American people, dictate the tax rate you should have to pay?
