Does a farming apprenticeship make sense for gap year work?

I've never had any kind of farming experience, but I'm willing to work and learn and I like rustic and rural settings. I've just finished grad school and will be starting post graduate studies in the fall. In the meantime I just need a place to stay and something to do, and I thought this might be fun and fulfilling. Does this sound like something viable or does it sound like some romantic naive notion/are there practical factors I'm overlooking... And what is the best way to go about looking for such work (in the US)?
