Does a certified jail officer fall under the carry laws that apply to police officers?

I was told that now that I was certified as a jail officer, I was able to carry a weapon off duty, and follow the same carry restrictions that police officers carry under. Is this true? I believe it is not, but I want to make sure. Thanks!

In the State of Texas, county detention officers must go through a peace officer course first to be able to carry while off duty. Those who are not registered peace officers may only carry on the job.

Carry laws vary from state to state and specifics are determined by each state.

As regards your right to carry a weapon when you are off-duty, I can guarantee you that you it will not do you any good when you appear before the judge and say "Well, someone on Yahoo Answers told me that I could."

Talk to your immediate supervisor. Ask to see where the policy is written.
