Does a carbon fibre specialist triathalon bike really make a difference to race time?

I entered my first triathalon last week on my old standard mountain bike, (fat knobbly tires and very heavy). Some of the competitors were on some quite awesome looking machines which of course whizzed past me down hill and on the flat, but I was able to catch some on inclines. What exactly are the benefits of these super looking bikes and do I really need one? I hear some cost more than a small car! Are the gears any different?
I felt, race wise, like I was on a pony pitted against a bunch of thoroughbreds!
