Does a blackberry require a data plan on an ATT network?

I was going to buy and unlock blackberry phone on ebay and try to slide my sim in it because I dont feel like paying an extra 35 for att data package I am on a family plan already giving them about 260 a month. If I get an unlocked blackberry on ebay would this work? I just like the QWERTY keyboard and it is sweet to text on.
