Do the rear drum brakes on a 97 dodge caravan self adjust? or do you need ot manually adjust them as pads wear?

what kind of self adjusting mechanism is it?
fyi, the metal plate you mentioned IS the adjuster, im just lookgin to know if this particular car has that metal plate or not.

As far as my knowledge goes on cars is, there is no automatic adjuster.Once you take off your tire and the rear brake drum off . Dust off the crap with an air nozzle. Opposite side of the brake cylinder [mostly lower side of the brake assembly] you will notice there is a spring and a ratchet type mechanism .When you rotate the small ring the shoes will expand in diameter. I would recommend 2 to 3 full turns . If the drum has to be forced in then you have turned to much . Back of the ring one turn at a time. remember the shoes are Pivoted on the top and they can swing on either side. And hope you don't screw in the ring the opposite side they the shoes diameter will be even smaller. There is a small metal plate which holds the ring from rotating . Just lift the plate and make sure that the plate is set after you are done with the adjustment.

it has an auto adjuster but it must be put in reverse and the brakes applied a few times for it to auto adjust.

yes they have self adjusters. they adjust when you back up and apply the breaks

only the emergency brake (when applied a few times)will adjust your rear brakes, backing up has nothing to do with adjustment, when ebrake is applied it ratchets starwheel ,just set and release ebrake few times if its not already frozen up
