Dodgy Landlord, need advice?!!?

We moved into a private rented flat on the 16th Feb this year, and it was 6 month contract! The rent was £460 a month, we paid the deposit plus rent, but didn't get a reciept for that. All the months we have been there we paid the rent and other bills, but we had to move out because of family problems. We moved out on the 26th April. (April was paid for). When we moved in the flat was a right mess etc, so the landlord said he took money at of the deposit for that, landlord says we still owe him money, and if we don't pay his taking us to court etc. First he said we have to pay the remainder of rent of the 6 month contact and still pay for the gas!!, now he wants just a months rent!!!!
Any advice would be great thanks, if you need to know more please feel free and ask.
