dodge ram 1500 trans and engine question?

ok i just bought a used dodge ram 1500. i love it i now have that and my dakota. i just have a few questions. its a 96 with the 5.9 360.i was testing it out around the first day i got it on an empty highway and once it hit 80 mph it red lined and bounce off the rev limiter. a few days ago the same thing happned but i got it up to 90. once i let off the gas and hit it again it got past 90 but i slowed down becuse i was getting back to town. also another question i have is how good do the 5.9s usally hold up? i know chrysyler makes damn good cars and even better trucks. ive never had the 5.9 though biggest i had was the 5.2 wich almost hit 300,000 and still may have but i sold it.
 
I have the same truck. 1996 Ram 1500 SLT 4X4 with the 5.9 engine. It has been driven that fast numerous times and the tach never has hit the redline. I didn't even know it had a rev limiter. It sounds like your transmission might not be shifting into overdrive. I can't say anything negative about the 360 engine. Mine has 230,000 miles and still runs great and has plenty of power. I don't baby my truck and it still performs flawlessly. It's a work truck that hauls ladders and scaffold, tows trailers on mountain roads and goes off road frequently. The only thing I don't care for is the fuel economy. If I drive conservatively it gets 14 mpg. When it's loaded or if I drive too fast it only gets 11 mpg.
