Dodge Ram 1500 Torque Converter?

I need a torque converter for my 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9L 2WD. When I went to the part store, they asked me how many splines mine has. I need to get the part before I start working on it. How do I tell how man splines the torque converter has without taking it apart? Is there a number I can get off of the transmission? Will the VIN number help? Thanks in advance for your help.
