Doctor rant..feel like I'm getting the runaround

catheryn,

That is crazy that they won't refer you mom to a specialist with regards to her jaw.

I've been told also it would be at least 8 months to a year for a consultation with another surgeon (plastic or hand)

I live in a mid size city. We have plastic surgeons but only one hand surgeon who has a long waiting list. All of them do. The current surgeon I go to be a new grad, so I got in fast, but I'm not sure of this doctor now.

The doctor that made the comments about my fingers is a rehabilitations specialist.

I have a male family doctor now. Even though he has never judged me out loud I am not so sure of him either now. I continue to have problems post op and saw him yesterday since I had a standing appointment. I have never cried in front of him, and I did yesterday because of how bad this sensation I am experiencing. He basically said to increase the meds I'm on. He is not a surgeon, but I keep trying to describe the sensation etc and they don't seem to listen to what I am trying to say or describe. The meds I'm on are not helping the sensation I am experiencing. If they don't know that is fine but after weeks of going through this, I wish someone would look into it. I am considering finding a new family doctor even though it is difficult to find one accepting new patients.

My surgeon is referring me to a pain clinic, so I decided to phone today to inquire about my referral or wait time. I was told the waiting list is a year and the doctors triage each referral. However, when I gave my name, she said they don't have the referral, and I should phone the surgeons office. I did but the secretary said the hospital where I go for my follow ups is the place where the surgeon would send my referral via computer. At my last follow up, he did send a referral via computer while I was in the room. So I'm not sure. What is going on. The wait times in Canada are very long but when you're in pain a year seems a long way off. I know the surgeon did say he would try to get me in soon.

I'm considering finding another family doctor but there are very few that are accepting new patients. I did find one place, but I have to fill out a form and the doctor will review each one. I guess they decide who they are accepting?. Never heard of that before. I don't know much about the doctor so if I am accepted, I suppose I will find out.

I also phoned that women's clinic to inquire about a family doctor. The wait list is a year long and they only accept patients that live in that area. I don't live in that area. I asked if they knew of other clinics that have doctors who are good with abuse victims. They didn't know of any.

Don't know if this info will help any but...
I live in Canada and I would suggest going to a dr at a walk in clinic? or to the ER?
I may have misunderstood your post but now if you have had some surgery on your hand and are still having problems you need to contact the surgeon directly.
Best wishes

I had surgery for carpal tunnel on my wrist. I did go to a walk in clinic and someone referred me to a new surgeon who just graduated so I got in fast. . Unfortunately that walk in clinic shut down and the doctor moved to another city.

I did see the surgeon last week for a follow up and mentioned about my pain etc becoming worse. He didn't say anything about my symptoms except that he will send me to physio and pain clinic. I am supposed to go back in 3-4 weeks for a followup.

I did see my family doctor yesterday and told him also about these symptoms. He just said take more of your pain meds.

I may have to phone the surgeon's office and be seen sooner.

I did ask this surgeon with regards to my fingers but he didn't seem interested. Months later I asked if he could look at them because they are still bothering me, he seemed annoyed and still didn't.
