Docs To Go (D2Go)

I have had it with D2Go. I just don?t have the time to try and fix it frequently with all the documents and spreadsheets I use. Any suggestions for a replacement? I have both Word and Spreadsheets I would like to be able to save or transfer the existing ones over to the new application. It has been so long since I have been in the market for one, I am not up on the latest. Of course, TealDoc comes to mind, but I need spreadsheets also. Thanks in advance for the help.

I would suggest trying the latest version of Docs to Go. It is a lot simpler to use than previous versions. Starting with version 7, Docs to Go can handle native files, without the need to convert documents to the special format. You can simply copy and paste documents onto a SD card without running HotSync.

QuickOffice is good. However, Documents to Go has more flexibility in creating tables and PowerPoint files. QuickOffice only allows you to edit existing tables and PowerPoint presentations.

One plus for QuickOffice is that it comes with Print Boy, which will allow you to print via infrared or bluetooth.

I'm in exactly the same place as drbaer. I do use TealDoc combined with the freeware "TextSync" available at SourceForge, for docs - replaced Word2Go AND WordSmith with smaller files and flawless "desktop vs handheld edit" conflict resolution. The new TealDoc soon to be released will also copy to memopad by the way.

Docs2Go is the best I've found so far - TinySheet was great but the desktop sync was a nightmare, and it's been discontinued by Iambic. It became Quick Office, which I looked at but it's huge and the formatting on the handheld is not as good as D2G. It looks just plain goofy to me. Very cartoonish with odd icons.

I am searching presently, but I think Q/O and D2G are the two choices right now. I activate HotSync manually from a quick-launch icon, and often have crashes on Palm Desktop @ moment D2G "starts" with the T3 UNLESS I activate HotSync, wait for it to load, THEN launch D2G desktop, close it, and sync. No problems thereafter - but then there's the issue of the 3 copies of spreadsheets D2G makes in your Programs/User/D2Go folder - Backup (with Archive subfolder!), SyncData and TranDocs - as well as the desktop backup copy of the spreadsheet. That's 4 copies. Anything private needs to be encrypted in four places - then decrypted for synch, and re-encrypted. At least TinySheet only had one copy.

The other problem (which may be showing up for drbaer) is the fact that spreadhseets changed/edited on the handheld GROW in size sometimes by 50% or more from their original, until synched. Those "changes," if lost, result in a spreadsheet synch crash. A 12k spreadsheet with edits gets to 20k, and then after synch goes "back" to 12k. If backed up to a card, and restored due to hard reset, it may not "see" the desktop version, and you end up with the infamous "DrBaer Important Spreadsheet -1" nightmare. I've found only solution to this is pick the "right one" on the desktop , copy it to another folder, delete all copies of it on handheld, delete former desktop copies, and "re-assign" as new sheet! Yikes.

Still, it's better than the constant error messages on the TinySheet handheld versions because it didn't properly copy Excel formatting from the desktop. At least D2G seems to that well - and give you 3 different font views. QuickOffice just seemed "cartoonish," and no real control over size of the sheets. You ended up looking at about 6 cells. With D2G "tiny", it's small but you see a lot of area. Dwinget's D2G7 thoughts might be the answer - and that comes with the TX. That's a reason I'm considering the TX - $29 upgrade from 6.008 comes right off the TX purchase price, and also allows for "security" on handheld sheets plus with permanent landscape, I'd have on "tilt view" and see more columns.

If I find anything else worth looking at I'll post here and PM/email you, drbaer. The solution, like TextSync, might be found somewhere OTHER than Palm sites - CNET, SourceForge, Major Geeks or some other PC site. I search weekly - nothing yet.

Unfortunately, I am using D2Go v7.006. So that is not the answer. I will read the reply above more carefully, but Spread Sheets do not want to sync regularly, and deleting and re adding them is a pain in the @#$%^.

Yes it certainly is. I occasionally have same problem, as pointed out above. Try opening Docs2Go desktop, then closing it again, before hotsynch. For some reason that stopped the "freezes" I was encountering.

I'll add that with TinySheet (predecessor to QuickOffice) - you could very lose sheets altogether on the handheld through a variety of steps I won't bore you with. D2Go is definitely more "secure" in things not getting vaporized although synching can be hit & miss. I find that launching the Desktop solves all my issues, and that's even when sheets are encrypted/decrypted in those folders I mentioned, and then assigned to synch on the handheld (little "hotsynch" icon activated).

OK, rather than post separate thread I thought I'd add it here:
I'm thinking of reinstalling TinySheet so the handheld versions of sheets don't "bloat" until synched. I won't be able to synch them any more, because I have loaded Ubuntu Linux (dual boot with W2K for now) and although it comes with Palm synch for "regular conduits," Docs2Go is not supoorted.

My add-on questoions to drbaer's are:

1, Is there a Linux "fix" for Docs to Go OR TinySheet desktop?
2. Is there a proggie that reads spreadsheets (open office or xls) from the SD Card and allows editing, like a doc-reader/editor (freeware or TealDoc)?
3. How do you Linux users get around the limited conduit thing or do you use a Windows emulator to load Palm Desktop?

Answering these questions might help drbaer with his quest - and drbaer, I'm emailing you right now. /p

Please help me find DocsToGo\TranDocs\*.txt

I'm frustrated because my spreadsheets on my Clie TJ27 are locked because of formulae and I can't find the file that tells me why.

I've looked in
C:\Program Files\Sony Handheld\tom\DocsToGo\TranDocs

and I don't see any of the .txt files that I'm supposed to find. I don't find those files anywhere on my PC.

 Aaargh.

Sorry you're having trouble, webmanoffesto - I'll try to help here since it's happened to me, but this can be tricky so consider the advice but don't necessarily take it!!

Those 3 folders (one of which you mention) are Backup (+Archive subfolder), Tran Docs and Sync Info. If there's a glitch, what you're looking for SHOULD revert to the Archive Folder (which is within "Backup" amongst the Docs2Go folders). If it isn't there's something weird going on. This is the same problem I've had more than once.

I have found the best solution (and this is probably what drbaer is talking about in OP) is:

1. right-click copy the information in your "exchange" folder on the desktop,
2. paste them somewhere else.
3. Go into those 3 folders (and you're one of the minority that know where they are!) and delete what's in those 3 folders.
4. Then bring up Docs2Go sync manager and tell it to DELETE all the files on there. That will delete them on the handheld too, so make sure you've got copies somewhere.
5. Rename all the docs in your "pasted folder."
6. Move them back in to the D2G SynchManager from your "safe folder" and reinstall.

If there's a problem with formulae it should refuse to install it - or install it so that when you bring up on the handheld it will show errors. If, as you say, it can't "find it anywhere," then that's truly strange. If the problem is that what you're looking for is "gone," that can be a real nightmare - even with card backup you can't just restore one sheet or document to Docs2Go without ALSO restoring the Docs2Go document database. It just doesn't "show up," even though you can see it in a file manager proggie like Filez or TealMover.

What I'd be hoping for is A) it's in your archive (D2G/user) folder, or B) on your handheld. The PROBLEM is, if it's ONLY on your handheld it may be deleted when you purge the synch manager - can you copy it to an SD card? I'm assuming it won't open at all on the handheld - but Docs2Go won't synch the locked file or provide you any clue where it is? Do you have another "virgin" copy of it in Excel/Word somewhere else and could possibly just reinstall it?

It's defintely weird and annoying - that's why the OP said "had it." I haven't had any problems lately after reinstalled Palm Desktop and D2Go last week - just have to live with it for now. But I'm flummoxed as to why there is no record of it anywhere on your PC - I have the oppositie complaint - there's ususally copies everywhere (3 minimum) in those 3 folders.

1. What's the Exchange Folder on my desktop?

2. By Synch Manager on my desktop do you mean the Docs2Go desktop program or the Clie Synch Manager that runs in my tray?
