Do you use Decongestants w/Asthma?

Last year when my first symptoms of asthma started (summer), the ENT nurse told me to use Allegra D and Sudafed.....along with the inhaler I was given...I just don't see either one of these meRAB as a good decongestant for me...so I am wondering about Mucinex, I know of some people who take it for their chest congestion. I am not sure if the doctor told them to use it or not, and I have no way of getting in touch with them..

Has anyone used Mucinex for the congestion? And I guess the bigger question is will it hurt your asthma condition to break up the congestion?

It may sound stupid to ask these questions but quite honestly, my doctor last year kept me so ill informed I felt like I had to second guess everything I was told....

I have an appt with a pulmonologist (sp?) and hopefully this will be a better choice of treatment.....

anything out there better or worse for chest congestion?? thanks
 
Sudafed is for sinus congestion. Mucinex can help with the chest but with asthma you really shouldn't have that much. Once again, a pulmonologist and an allergist is where you need to be.
 
I'm surprised about Allegra D and Sudafed. They are both decongestants. Either plain Allegra and Sudafed or Allegra D would seem more appropriate. That seems a bit overkill.

I've taken Guifenisen for years as needed. It helps break up chest congestion. Not sure why it would be prescribed for asthma unless you have an upper respiratory infection that is aggrevating the asthma.
 
If you have a runny nose, congestion, or postnasal drip, then drying it up can help the overall condition of your respiratory system. Certainly if you tend to get allergies that lead to bronchitis, that would make asthma worse!
