18 and clueless

A lot of people around me recently are debating politics and the news and they all seem to have a firm grasp and opinion. I however have never really paid much attention to the media and so can't really participate.
I have started reading a the newspaper in and i do find it interesting but because i don't have and previous knowledge a lot of it lacks context for me and i am still finding i hard to figure out my opinion.
SO.... I was wandering whats a good way to get a firm grasp on the world today?
I really want to participate in discussions as i find it all fascinating BUt i really want to have my own opinion and not just reiterate what i have heard said before.
also i'm in the UK
