I asked a question about sense of entitlement, last night and as an example I used students who failed tests and had parents call the school and freak out at me, especially since I don't give extra points for nothing.
My example was "If little billy gets a 47% on a test, and there's no place I can give him extra points because the work isn't there, his parents freak out at me - not him" and someone said if I give a 47% then I'm just awful and nasty. The way I see it - and even with my own kids before I started teaching - was that no one is entitled to extra points for nothing. If I gave a kid an extra 6pts to reach 50% then I would have to give everyone else 6pts as well. And it would be obvious if there's no where to put the points - especially if half the test was blank. And then if the school board got wind of me throwing out extra points, then that's my butt on the line. Sorry for sounding selfish - but I'd prefer to keep my job over passing a child who won't put in the effort.
I also got called nasty for failing a girl for cheating. It's school policy that if someone is cheating, they get 0. A girl brought in notes with her and had them hidden - that's a 0. These kids are all about 16 years old - they don't need their hands held anymore.
I don't know why this bothered me - was this just a nasty Y!A user .. or do some of you agree ?
