Do you think the News/Media is decreasing the Public's Confidence so we spend less?

I think that is definitely a factor. When all you hear is doom and gloom, you're going to be even more scared that you already are... so, yeah, you're going to pull back from spending until you see what's going to happen next.

The media certainly shares some blame here... not all mind you... but some.
 
And as a result increasing the fear so the Christmas Season fell even Shorter than projections? Does anyone notice that they don't contribute constructive solutions as much as inciting people to keep their money in their mattress?

What do you think?
 
The new medias only report the truth. Agreed that some of them may bend something to show one side or another, but in this case, we are not in good shape. The stock market has never taken a hit like today since 1929.
All that is real.I wish I had the real answer for you, but hte news is the news and we do need to know.
 
It's up to economists and CEOs to solve the problems with the economy. The news media reports on the economy in real terms. Their job is to report, not to fix what they're reporting about, nor to lie about it, nor to cover it up. However, I too spent a lot more money this Christmas than any year in the past.
 
To a degree yes, this phenomenon is called a "self fulfilling prophecy" in economics. The same is true partially for inflation. The media predicts inflation so to preserve their real profit businesses put their prices up which actually causes the inflation.
 
The news media can slant things....but economic data is hard to slant. It's numbers and it's ugly.

I think people's 401k statements....investments.....home value....lost jobs....jobs about to be lost.....have a much bigger effect than anything the News says. The News people are seeing the same ugly statements, and reflecting that, but the mass opinion would be no different, regardless.

This isn't a typical cyclical downturn, and you don't need the media to know that.
 
Fear and bad news sell papers and ads. Good news and healthy ideas do not. It is all about the money.
 
The Media is exacerbating our present condition, it does influence the lemmings who are the basis of their watching public. Proven by Norman O above.
The same reason the Media controls who is voted for, very powerful and steered by greed.
 
Yes, it's just like when there is a storm coming...they turn it into a Cyclone and estimate the devastation & death toll before it hits land! They base their ratings on frightening people, that's how they get ppl to stick to their channel!
Ethics in Journalism virtually non-exsistant!

It's sick and irresponsible!
