I read a preview of his new book "Under the Dome". It sounds exactly like The Simpsons Movie. A town in Maine discovers they're surrounded by a giant dome. People start to wonder what's up and try to find out the reason that the dome is there. It just seems a little weird how they both came up with the same idea in this close of time.

yea...i jus listened to the interview and was kinda bummed out by that factor. ill probably read it anyway....but im kinda hesitant cuz i dislike that movie....

As a hard science fiction fan, I've always had a difficult time taking anything by King seriously. In fact, I kind of blame him, among other factors, for the deterioration of the science fiction genre into mere "horror."

And I've always had a soft spot, and a lot of sympathy, for Tabitha King, his wife. What must it be like to be a fairly talented novelist, and a moderately successful one, but be married to HIM? You work like crazy to sell a few good books and he sells millions of crappy ones!

I feel bad for her.

I cant be sure, but Ive never felt that the "trapped under a dome" idea was necessarily new or original even when it premiered in The Simpsons Movie. It takes time and effort to write a novel just like it does to write a movie. The subjects are similar but I would just call it a coincidence. Or maybe King was somewhat inspired by the movie, only he really knows. The original manuscript for Under the Dome was written in the 1970s under the name The Cannibals. He claims that he had no idea of the movie till now, but unless he doesn't watch TV (and he very well might not) I cant imagine him not knowing something about it. This reminds me of the Kimba vs Lion King argument. But King's novel will probably have a substantially different plot line and ending than The Simpsons Movie, instead of the frightening similar animation frames that the Kimba/Lion King argument has.

Even still, two books/movies/etc... can have similar plot lines and still be different stories. Until a creative genius emerges, there will only so many ideas, and somethings are bound to be recycled. I could write a story about two guys and a monster returning a powerful artifact and some people will call it a Lord of the Rings ripoff even if it has a completely different plot and character development.

King fans are going to continue to read his books and Simpsons fans are going to continue to watch the show
