In a move that could lead to cures for diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, MPs voted 336 to 176 to allow it, but opponents said it was a "step too far".
Speaking at the opening of two days of debate on the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill, Tory MP Edward Leigh said: "There is no overwhelming evidence that this research, that does cross this ultimate boundary, will cure anything.
"We cannot and should not be spliced together with animals."
AdvertisementHealth minister Dawn Primarolo said research would be policed to ensure it was "necessary and desirable".
The legislation licenses scientists to implant human material inside an animal egg. The resulting embryo will be harvested for stem cells which can be used to create brain, skin, heart and other tissues. Embryos would be destroyed after 14 days.
I think this is so terribly wrong. This is gross violation of humanity and a step that will have far-reaching & horrible consequences.
