...consider? He is a very motivated kid and I think it could be a good thing to consider when he turns 18, but I wouldn't want him to go to war or anything. Does the Nat. guard have areas that don't go to war? We talk about college, and of course this will help him with that, but not sure about it all. Anyone have experience with this?

The National Guard.......and the reserves of any military branch are now involved in the wars we are fighting against terrorism. My brother was in the Air Nat'l Guard and served during the first Iraqi War............Desert Storm. He flew cargo planes in the fighting arena taking in supplies and men.
It is good that he is considering all options, and looking at it at this time. He might also look into colleges and scholarships for college. Sounds like he is a very motivated kid, and mature in his years for even thinking about his future. Kudos to you the parent
