for a debate at school? I don't we may get told that there are obsesity epidemics and stuff and there are pics of skinny models in magazines but they're not telling us to go out and get eating disorders etc. What are your thoughts on this matter?

yeah. the media is setting impossible to be healthy standards by portraying women with ribs and spines showing as the only thing that is beutiful

I think we need to boost our children's self esteem from the time they are young. Explain to them just how silly it is to try and look like people who look like bones with meat and that so many of those photos are touched up.

the media has NOTHING to do with eating disorders!!!!!!!
nothing!!!!

its the own persons fault, at the end of the day "you are your own man!!"
meaning that its the person that has the last say not the medias!!!

I think it's the skinny models.
The media.
ALOT of the trashy teen and even kid magazines.
And no they're not telling you too go out and get an ED, they're showing you how skinny you should be... Which is a load of..... :)

Also depression can lead to an ED. And there's heaps of other reasons. :)

yes i think media is the one to blame. All these new shows with models (America's next top model) make it seem like thin is in, when it's really not. Woman usually are constantly looking at their weight and wanting to lose a couple of pounds to become slim. But in reality, everyone's body is different and for women to get to a thin frame, they feel the need to pick up eating disorders. You never see editorial spreads in magazines with thick models, instead, you see stick figures.

Hiya,

Eating disorders are a lot more deep rooted than just being caused by the media - yeah, it probably does contribute towards some cases. But not all. Anorexia and Bulimia are about control, not about looking like Kate Moss.

Useful sites....

Remember that eating disorders aren't just limited to Anorexia and Bulimia, there is also Binge Eating Disorder, Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified, Orthorexia nervosa and Compulsive Overeating Disorder.

Hope this helps and take care,

I do think the media is to blame.

People see all of these thin "beautiful" people, and it makes others feel like sh!t. They want all the attention all these people are getting, so they starve themselves, etc.

Yes. The media has a strong influence on our beliefs and ideologies. Most of what we know about what's outside of our immediate surroundings is through the media. The media portrays images of super skinny models, followed by a Fast Food commercial. We are getting polar opposite messages: eat unhealthy foods, but be a size 0, and it somehow makes us think that that's the way to go. But how can we do that? Many people, women especially, feel that the only beauty comes in a size 0, but also wants to go eat that pizza. The person may develop that eating disorder thinking that it is the only way that she will be socially accepted.

I think it is .
Really, don't you like look at the media, magazines and stuff and idolize these people. Maybe like Paris Hilton, they see her in the magazines and then they see themselves and how they don't look like that. BUT SHE LOOKS GOOD. So they think they need to lose weight even if theyre not skiinny. Not realizing that the models are all underweight, ynhealthy and photoshopped.

I think people need to start holding themselves responsible for their own actions instead of always immediately painting a bulls-eye on the media
