Do you think that black history month should be about teaching African history?

In the UK and the US.

When black history month comes round here in the UK, i always find it strange that African and Caribbean descendants are taught about slavery as being the entirety of black history. I think it's an insult. What about the Oyo and Benin Kingdoms of west Africa? We could also learn more about Egyptian civilisation. I'm sorry, i don't know much about other African country's history because I have only researched my own.

Also, don't you think that its detrimental to African Americans to learn about slavery and civil rights being their only history, because that simply isn't true and i bet it has something to do with insecurity among some black americans.

Your thoughts?
