Do you think that artistically speaking many famous paintings are overrated and overpriced?

It is an absurdity to valuate some paintings at more than 100 million dollars. I understand that art dealers, collectors and museums all have an interest in inflating the value of some paintings but that is caused by commercial interests and has nothing to do with the real artistic value of the painting.

The most famous Van Gogh's, Gauguin's or Monet's should not be worth more than 1 million dollars each.

I thank you for your opinion.

Why shouldn't a piece of history, culture and art be worth what it brings at auction? If I go to an auction and buy a teaspoon that regularly sells at auction for $10, but is becoming more rare, and only a few exist, and I pay $50 for it. . . it is now worth $50.

There have been several art auctions recently that have experienced a drop in bidding prices due tot he economy. And artists can fall out of favor and find their works worth less. But to say that a VanGogh or Monet is not worth a lot of money just points out the fact that you are likely not very well versed in art history, art values, or the significance of art for cultural and sociological history.

Now. . . a baseball player getting millions to play ball. . . that is over-pricing! No?

As far as being over-rated, that statement supports my assessment that you probably do not have a well-developed appreciation for artwork in general, and art you don't care for, in particular. Of course, that is just my deduction from your statements . . .
