We're not talking about regular consumers. So I stand by my original statement. The Xbox 360 is NOT a substitute for a PS3. If someone is crazy enough to spend $1200 on a PS3 on eBay they're not going to rationally examine alternatives and decide to get a Xbox 360 for $400, they're going to buy it now and net you a $600 profit.

no i mean a day of work to sit up and buy the damn thing @ 6am.

theres no way in fuck im going in to work after sitting out in the cold for 10 hours straight

We're talking holiday season where it isn't unusual for each console to sell 5 million units before the end of the year. If someone decides they want a Wii or Xbox 360, there will be someone in their place wanting the PS3. You'd be naive to think the PS3 won't sell out or be sold for good profits on eBay.

The people paying $1000+ aren't people who are exactly thinking rationally so it's ridiculous to try to apply any sort of logic to their purchases. They want the PS3 and they're going to pay you a lot of money if you have one for sale, end of story.

I'm not disputing the popularity, or if it will sell out or not...it most certianly will. What I'm saying is the situation/conditions are different this year. The demand will still be high, but I don't think we'll see HUGE profit gains on the PS3 like we did on the 360 last year. Not because it's 360 vs. PS3...but because of economics. Sure there will be a handful of people (with bottomless wallets) that will pay ungodly amounts of money for them...but that certainly won't be the case for most the systems sold.

People keep assuming that because "people are bitching about prices" that they wont buy it when their friend's get one. Be realistic has a system by a big name ever been released right before Christmas and not been an absolute clusterfuck of demand? I doubt Sony is shipping more PS3s than they plan on selling before Christmas. I am sure 20% of the OTers who are bitching about PS3 will be on the waiting list tomorrow and another 30% will be trying to buy one before Xmas. Sony has established itself as a pretty successful company lets assume they are not planning on losing money here

1 - Who said anything about substitutes? We're talking about a marketing environment here. People have a choice...regardless of what in your mind is better.

2 - HAHA

3 - Not just OTers, mainstream press, media outlets, news sites, marketing experts, etc. The price is THE biggest hurdle Sony is facing with the PS3. But I realize you're too much of a fanboy for any of this to sink in.

4 - WTF? $1,200 is $1,200...meaning no matter what it's for, it's a lot of money. And you will find VERY few people that will just hand that over.
