Do you think people use to chat more online in the days of Aol popularity?

I feel that people and friends do not chat as much anymore online..
Not that I really like doing that anymore nowadays I guess?
I think I avoid instant messaging chats, just realized.. I prefer emails but doesn't seem like people are into writing emails are they?..
