Do you think penning poetry is a great way to beat stress?

London, March 7 (ANI): Former British Prime Minister Sir John Major used to secretly write poetry to relieve himself of stress, it has emerged. The 64-year-old, who lost the 1997 general election to Tony Blair, penned verse during his time in 10 Downing Street, including rhyming couplets honouring former England Test captain Lord Colin Cowdrey.
"Throughout my time in Downing Street and office I had always jotted down poems," the Telegraph quoted him as saying."They were about cricket subjects and about politics and about characters. With some of my political poems it is probably best they are never seen in public!
"But in the case of Colin l am pleased to share it. We were very close friends and used to get together for whiskies almost on a weekly basis," he added.Judith Palmer, director of the Poetry Society, dubbed his "Lord Colin Cowdrey - A Cricketing Gentleman" as a "heartfelt elegy", stressing the cultural contribution made by Sir John.
She said: "It would be great if we had more politicians actively participating in our cultural life. "To write poetry you need to have an attentiveness to life and a wish to communicate - skills that are also good in a politician.'" (ANI)

Weirdly enough I got through a really stressful breakup by writing Haiku - they were pretty dreadful, but helped at the time. I liked the limitations of the form for keeping me focused.

John Major was shagging Edwina Currie, behind his wife's back,to relieve his stress!

I can see it helping some. Personally it would actually stress me out. I enjoy creativity, but I have to push it out of me and it causes me stress.

I think that if you are in a heightened emotional state then poetry will come more easily from you as it keens the senses. for me personally I enjoy reading but not writing, it is gardening that eases my mind and body.

I have to say Faith I never expected this Q to pertain to John Major!

Ooer.

I love poetry and read a lot of it and listen to it on radio 4. A fair bit makes me cringe but when you come across one that does it for you it's powerful stuff.

I think you have to be a calm, measured and introverted type of personality for poetry composition. I am not. I am a splatter gunner!

I once wrote poems. Can't call it poetry though!!

I did it for my younger grandson's when they were very small and we had a giggle.

Here is one of them.

There's a worm in our garden,
His name is Fred,
He wears silk pyjamas,
And sleeps in a bed,
he gets into trouble,
Quite often, does Fred.
For chasing the chickens.
Around the cowshed.

Silly I know and not much cop, but then I bet I had more fun than JM. Well nice fun anyway. LOL

Having this kind of fun does beat stress, and spending time with kids is great therapy for anyone.
