McCain is too intelligent to be confident. He knows he is carrying around a huge albatross by being a Republican who is likely to carry on with many of George Bush's policies. People, by a two-to-one margin, think Bush has done a bad job as president. And that has no serious chance of changing significantly between now and November. McCain's most realistic goal is to avoid a huge landslide of a loss.
